File structure

How to organize your files

Seanime does not require a specific file structure to work, thanks to its powerful scanner.

However, it is recommended to follow a few conventions to ensure that your files are properly parsed and matched.

Remember, the scanner works on a file-by-file basis, the entire file path is considered.

TL;DR

  • These conventions are already followed by most release groups
  • Series: File names should contain the series name OR any folder containing the series files should contain the series name.
  • Seasons: File names should include the season number OR be located in a folder with the season number. (This is not necessary for single-season series)
  • Seasons: Files with absolute episode numbering don't need a season number.
  • Episodes: File names should include the episode number.
  • Movies: Movie files must be located in a separate folder named after the movie.
  • Specials: Specials should have prefixes such as S00EXX, Special XX or SPXX in their name.
  • Episode 0: If AniList considers Episode 0 part of the main series, ensure that your library includes that file with the episode number 0.

Batches

Batches are a collection of episodes from a single or multiple seasons of a series. They are usually released as a single folder containing multiple folders/files.

Seanime supports parsing of batch folders and files up to three levels deep.

Keep in mind that the following convention examples are already followed by most release groups.

Single season

File names should include the season number OR be located in a folder with the season number.

Episode numbers

Seanime parses episode numbers from file names. The following examples show the correct ways episode numbers should be formatted. Keep in mind that these are just snippets of file names, the full file name may contain additional information.

Ensure that movies are in their own folder, near the root of the library.

Specials

Specials are episodes that are not part of the main series.

Specials files should be named as follows:

Anime S00E01.mkv
Anime 00x01.mkv
Anime SP01.mkv
Anime Special 01.mkv

Seanime will parse them appropriately so that they do not interfere with the main series episodes and progress tracking.

Separate entry

If the special has its own entry on AniList, it should be placed in its own folder.

Episode 0

Sometimes AniList might include special Episode 0 as part of the main episode count.

In such cases, ensure that your library includes that Special with the episode number 0.
